Abstract
- Fragile hope for peace in Rwanda. Discussions are due to take place today between the rebels of the Patriotic Front and the provisional government set up after the assassination of the Head of State.
- Hands raised in sign of peace, these 500 members of the Tutsi ethnic group ask for help. But the column of Belgian soldiers came to evacuate 18 foreign nationals who had taken refuge in a hospital in this northern district of Kigali. They have been besieged since the day before by Hutu bands. An evacuation, and just an evacuation. They won't do anything more.
- 20,000 RPF soldiers have already entered Kigali. They await the departure of the last foreigners to invade the city. The Tutsi rebels infiltrated the slum areas last night. Fighting intensifies around the airport.
- No one knows how many Tutsis have been massacred in recent days. Corpses litter the streets. The Hutu, the ethnic group of the government, fear the revenge of the rebels.
- The belligerents must meet today under the aegis of the United Nations to negotiate a ceasefire. But the Blue Helmets may no longer be there to enforce it: Boutros Boutros-Ghali plans to withdraw the 2,500 peacekeepers.
