DAR ES SALAAM, July 22 (AFP) - Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi Wednesday expressed dismay at reports of violations of a truce agreed ten days ago between the Rwandan government and the rebel Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF).

Mwinyi appealed in a statement to the two sides to desist from acts that could undermine the trust and goodwill that prevailed at the Tanzania-mediated peace talks in Arusha, where the truce was agreed upon.

The truce that would have halted 21 months of tribal-based civil war, broke down a few hours after it was supposed to take effect at midnight last Sunday.

The government accused the RPF of attacking its forces on Monday along the northern border with Uganda, where it claims the rebels are based.

The RPF said it had retaliated to shelling by the army. No further fighting has since been reported.

Both sides will hold talks in Ethiopia next week on implementing the truce.
