NAIROBI, July 4 (AFP) - Rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) have started broadcasts on a newly launched clandestine radio station, known as "Voice of the RPF, the Indominatable Fighters."

Monitors here said the radio's strong signals appeared to be coming from Muhabura, a mountain on Rwanda's northern border with Uganda.

On Saturday, the rebel radio broadcast traditional songs and anti-government statements on the 49-metre shortwave band which also accommodates frequencies used by the official Rwanda radio, the monitors said.

The rebels hit the airwaves for the first time last June, but their radio station's signals were too weak to be picked up clearly in the region.

At the time, the government claimed that the rebel broadcasts were coming from outside the country, an apparent reference to Uganda, but the authorities in Kampala strongly denied the allegations.

The Rwandan government has yet to comment on the latest broadcasts.
