On the just-concluded peace Rwandan peace accord, Salim said it was "a triumph for African mediation and diplomacy, and a tremendous thrust to the entire thinking and determination on resolution of African conflicts".

He said the OAU would continue working with Rwandan peace process official facilitator, Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, neighbouring countries, parties in Rwanda and Rwanda's transitional government to ensure that the accord is strictly adhered to.

Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and RPF Chairman Alexis Kanyarengwe signed the peace accord here on Wednesday that should end three years of a bloody war that has devastated the economy of the tiny central African nation and displaced at least a million of its citizens.

Salim has called for the formation of a U.N.-supervised "neutral international force" to help implement the accord during the country's transition to democratic rule.

Salim said he had contacted U.N. secretary-general Boutros Boutros-Ghali on the need to take immediate measures through the U.N. Security Council.
