- In Rwanda, the United States said this evening that it was ready to finance a multinational peacekeeping force to try to put an end to the massacres taking place in that country.
- Recently the United Nations forces on the spot were reduced from 2,500 to 300 men, at the very time when the politico-ethnic clashes claimed tens of thousands of victims.
- The road of exodus. For these thousands of Rwandans, this is their only salvation. They are thus 250,000 to have left their country in recent days for neighboring Tanzania.
- These refugees, mostly members of the majority Hutu ethnic group, are fleeing reprisals from the Rwandan Patriotic Front, from the Tutsi minority, victims of massive massacres since the death of the Rwandan President on 6 April. Marc Gastellu Etchegorry, deputy director of operations at MSF: "These massacres have killed 100,000 people, maybe a little more, maybe a little less. And at the same time, a political war has been re-declared which has now lasted for three or four years between two fronts which are represented by Tutsi or by Hutu".
- With the influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees, the Tanzanian authorities and the International Red Cross fear the risk of an epidemic. Some 250,000 more refugees are expected to arrive soon if the situation does not improve.
- Today there are only 350 peacekeepers left in Rwanda. The UN, accused of partiality by one of the belligerents, withdrew from the conflict. The international community, which has just appealed to the OAU, the Organization of African Unity, seems to want to leave it to the Africans to settle this war among themselves.
