Victims of genocide against the Tutsi

The 1994 Tutsi genocide in Rwanda is the subject of countless disputes, including the number of victims. The UN's estimate of 800,000, rehashed by the media, is not based on any substantiated documentation. Articles claiming to be scientific underestimate the number of victims. Funded by the World Bank, a 2019 conference gave a voice to researchers, some of whom go so far as to claim that there were only 50,000 Tutsi victims.

The census conducted by the Rwandan Ministry of Local Government and Social Affairs published in 2002 counted between 934,218 and 1074,017 victims from October 1st, 1990 until December 31, 1994.

This census is an underestimation. Indeed, many families are completely disappeared and no one reminded their existence to investigators. People identified as Tutsi being largely disappeared, the responses to this survey come often from people identified at the time as Hutu. These were able to omit to quote names for fear of being suspected of having participated in the massacre, of having witnessed them or for fear of reprisals on the part of the assassins or their families.

Beyond the figures, the goal here pursued is to use the techniques of IT and World Wide Web to publish lists of massacred people in order to prevent their names be forgotten.
