- Kigali in the hands of Tutsi rebels. The government had already left the capital of Rwanda to take refuge about fifty kilometers away. He had to flee again today.
- Kigali, under the attacks of the Patriotic Front, would indeed have fallen today. The Tutsi rebels from the north would therefore be preparing to enter a capital emptied of its population.
- The members of the interim government, installed since April 12 in Gitarama, have even found refuge in Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu.
- Faced with the violence of the fighting, the UN Assistance Mission had to interrupt the evacuation of civilians gathered in the stadium this afternoon.
- Currently 400,000 Rwandans, mostly Hutu, are trying to flee through the South. The arrival of the Tutsi, whose ethnicity was massacred by Hutu-dominated government forces, did not bode well. The civil war in Rwanda has already claimed 500,000 lives and hundreds of thousands of refugees are already in neighboring countries.
- There would still be 40,000 people in Kigali without water and without food. However, the Red Cross hospital continues to receive the wounded with makeshift means. Dr John Sundin, ICRC surgeon: "Because of the intensity of the mortar attacks, we have not been able to carry out any operation for the past three days. Every day we receive 30 to 40 wounded here and we no longer even have the necessary equipment to proceed with treatment".
- On the ground, the UN has therefore suspended its evacuations of displaced civilians on the outskirts of the capital to areas deemed safer. Operations could resume tomorrow [May 30] when peace talks between RPF rebels and government forces are due to open in Kigali.
