Abstract
François-Xavier Nzuwonemeye, a senior officer in the Rwandan armed forces since 1993, supported the regime of President Habyarimana as well as the interim government and fought the Rwandan Patriotic Front. During 1994, particularly between April 6 and July 4, 1994, when mass genocidal massacres were taking place, decided by the interim government to which he had pledged allegiance, he commanded the armored reconnaissance battalion in Kigali, said RECCE battalion, one of three elite units of the Rwandan army, which directly took part in planning, organizing and carrying out the massacres.
