Abstract
Based on documentary sources, this article examines the position of the Missionaries of Africa, also known as the White Fathers, on the political and ethnic issues raised during the preparations for the genocide in Rwanda, the genocide itself and the the post-genocide period. Some, especially those who returned to Rwanda after 1994, recognized the mistakes made by the Church and tried to relaunch their ministry on new foundations. Many, however, especially in Belgium, the country where half of them originated, adopted a more defensive attitude. They subscribed, explicitly or not, to the double genocide theory that the crimes of the Rwandan Patriotic Front equaled, if not surpassed, those of the Rwandan authorities and militias during the genocide. Overall, the General Council of the Society in Rome reacted to the Rwandan situation in a non-partisan way.
