Abstract
- New scenes of violence in Rwanda: Hutu militias allegedly kidnapped and probably massacred around 40 Tutsi children who had taken refuge in a church.
- Despite the courage of two White Fathers Otto Mayer and Henri Blanchard, nothing could be done to save them.
- Father Henri Blanchard: "They made people get into a truck by force. In any case, we know that there are at least a dozen who were killed because we saw them afterwards". Since then, no news from the others but their fate, alas, is not in doubt.
- The two Fathers therefore returned to France to bear witness to the daily horror experienced by a population abandoned even by UNAMIR. Father Henri Blanchard: "We were really deeply disappointed by the lack of interest of the international community, especially when we saw that the UNAMIR, instead of reinforcing its presence and immediately creating humanitarian corridors to save people, withdrew 2,100 people. They stayed at 400. What did you want them to be able to do ?! […] Politicians on both sides must come to understand that there is no solution without dialogue and without giving up something of your own".
- Even today, the raging fighting between rebels and governments has prevented the peacekeepers from evacuating civilians.
- An MSF delegation was received by the President of the Republic and asked for more peacekeepers, especially in Kigali and its surroundings.
