Abstract
- In Rwanda, the Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels are pressing their advantage in the northwest of the country, while the French forces of Operation Turquoise are in the southwest.
- The rebels captured the town of Ruhengeri last night. As a result, tens of thousands of refugees are once again on the roads, heading towards Zaire.
- Nothing could stop them. Since 5:00 a.m. this morning, Rwandans have been pouring across the Zairian border. They are coming from Gisenyi, the town where the provisional government has entrenched itself.
- Early this morning at dawn, gunfire, a rumor: the RPF is attacking. And thousands upon thousands of refugees from all over the country set off again, but this time into exile.
- The Zairian authorities, overwhelmed, were unable to stop the flow and had to lift the border post barrier.
- They then tried to disarm the militiamen, the individuals who left with machetes. But the quantity of weapons seized was negligible compared to everything that had passed through Zaire.
- On a track where numerous militiamen appeared, soldiers opened fire to try to stop the entry of a heavily armed group. In vain. Then they gave up. And for the moment, this massive exodus is proceeding without incident.
