- Meeting just hours ago at Paris's request, the UN Security Council has adopted by consensus a statement read by its president: "The Security Council demands an immediate and unconditional ceasefire".
- An urgent decision in the face of the humanitarian disaster in Rwanda, where refugees number in the hundreds of thousands.
- In Ruhengeri, in the northwest of the country, an estimated one million people are fleeing the advance of Rwandan Patriotic Front troops. They are fleeing under fire, carrying only the bare essentials, heading for the French security zone, driven on by the sounds of war.
- A few kilometers away, another column, an inexorable march. Not a complaint, not a glance. These are the first refugees to arrive in Goma on the Zaire-Rwanda border, the French base for Operation Turquoise.
