Abstract
- Hunger, thirst, and exhaustion are causing the deaths of hundreds of people every day in the refugee camps in Zaire.
- There are estimated to be 1.2 million people in the French-controlled security zone, 1.2 million refugees crowded into camps or along the roads heading toward the Zairian border.
- The humanitarian situation today is catastrophic: for days, most refugees have been without shelter, food, water, or medical care. Dozens of the weakest among them have already died, succumbing to diseases they could no longer fight off.
- Along the road to Goma, the airbase for Operation Turquoise, bodies wrapped in reed mats line the path. Goma is overwhelmed; Goma and its camps are places where refugees lack everything and where epidemics spread within hours.
- But the greatest need is water: daily requirements are estimated at 30 million liters, yet tanker trucks can deliver only 180,000 liters a day. Refugees are therefore forced to draw water from Lake Kivu, water that is unfit for consumption and breeds disease.
- On the tarmac at Goma airport, the airlift continues at a slow pace: 19 flights yesterday [July 20]. At this rate, humanitarian organizations estimate that only one-tenth of the refugees' needs can be met.
