Abstract
- In Rwanda calm reigns this morning in Kigali. Yesterday [1st May] another massacre in a church: 12 dead, more than a hundred wounded.
- The exodus of refugees is increasing towards Tanzania. They would be 250 000, perhaps even the double, to have already crossed the border.
- In the 75 years that the Red Cross has existed, we have never seen such a movement of refugees. Thus in two days 250,000 Rwandans fled their country, fled this civil war which has already caused more than 100,000 deaths. They try to find refuge in Tanzania.
- Tanzania, which has already taken in half a million Rwandan refugees, is appealing for help. The rainy season has started, which makes it particularly difficult to deliver relief. Their state of health could deteriorate rapidly if food and care were to run out.
- The exodus has come to a sudden halt since the Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels closed the border with Tanzania. These refugees are mostly Hutu: they fled Rwanda for fear that the rebels, mostly Tutsi, would retaliate against them.
- The United Nations Security Council condemned once again on Saturday [April 30] the massacre of civilians in Rwanda but has still not decided on a reinforcement of the UN mission in this small African country.
