Abstract
Pre-colonial Rwanda was larger than present-day Rwanda. Between 1895 and 1918, it lost three of its northern provinces: Bgisha or Bwisha (in the Congo), Bufumbira (in Uganda), and almost all of Ndorwa (in Uganda) in the northeast, as well as Ijwi Island (in the Congo).
