Abstract
- Situation still as dramatic in Rwanda. In Kigali more than 500 Rwandan civilians have called for help, while the rebels of the Patriotic Front are scoring points in the capital.
- Kigali airport fell today into the hands of the Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels who also took over the Kanombe barracks a few meters away. Two more conquests for the RPF, under the eyes of some 200 Ghanaian blue helmets assigned to surveillance of the airport and who today welcomed hundreds of refugees.
- The capture of Kanombe is particularly symbolic: defended by the presidential guard, the most fortified of the government barracks would have been the starting point for the massacres of Tutsi and Hutu after the assassination of President Habyarimana on April 6.
- The rebels are now masters of two-thirds of the country. A country that today has between 200 and 500,000 dead.
- For its part, Uganda, a neighboring country, this morning declared three of its districts on the shores of Lake Victoria a disaster area. Carried by the Kagera River over more than 100 kilometers, nearly 40,000 Rwandan corpses would have washed ashore. Uganda has appealed for international assistance to deal with an alarming health situation.
- In addition, the government and the rebel forces have reportedly agreed to a ceasefire while the UN envoys are in the country. This ceasefire will last one day. It will take effect tomorrow morning [May 23].
